Robert Provine regularly participates in a book series by the website Edge.org, which focuses on an annual question posed to today’s leading thinkers.
Provine’s essay for his seventh contribution to this series is entitled “TANSTAAFL” (“There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”). It focuses on the fact that everything has its price, a concept relevant to everyday life as well as all sciences. The idea of TANSTAAFL borrows from Robert Heinlein’s science fiction classic, “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.”
In Provine’s sixth contribution to this annual series, he writes about “Internet Society.” Provine reflects upon how his experiences with new methods of communication “forced a rethinking of my views about communication, technological and biological, ancient and modern, and prompted research projects examining the emotional impact, novelty and evolution of social media.”
